La Traviata

La Traviata is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi, based on the novel and play Lady of the Camellias by Alexandre Dumas fils. The libretto is written by Francesco Maria Piave. The opera presents the love story between Violetta, a courtesan, and Alfredo, a young nobleman, some with a tragic ending, Violetta dying of tuberculosis.

Summary of the work

  • Act I: Violetta Valéry, a courtesan, is invited to a ball, where she meets the young Alfredo Germont. He passionately declares his love for her, and she falls in love with him.
  • Act II: Violetta and Alfredo live together in a country house, hidden from society. Alfredo's father, Giorgio Germont, arrives and convinces Violetta to give up Alfredo in order to save his family's reputation.
  • Act III: Violetta reunites with Alfredo, and he tells her that he no longer has anything to do with him. This separation is caused by Alfredo's desire to save his father, but Violetta is cured of her illness, and she eventually reconciles with Alfredo.
